Lots of faith and culture-oriented Simmer Starters today, but there’s one writing-related post too.
The Hardest Sins to Talk About (Tim Challies) – Some very helpful tips for confronting others about their sin. “Our task is to hold up a mirror so that others see themselves more than they see us. We tell what we have actually seen; we avoid interpretations and usually stay away from speaking of how the actions might have hurt or disappointed us—that can wait for another time.”
Let the Race Discussion Come Home (Kim Ransleben, DesiringGod Blog) – A good, thoughtful article about racial relations.
Push Function Quit (Doug Wilson) – Sometimes I appreciate Doug Wilson’s writings and sense of humor, and sometimes I don’t. I liked this article about whether video games are “bad for kids” – particularly for the gracious attitude toward young people and the distinction made between ignorance and stupidity. “While many modern kids are ignorant of that body of knowledge that their great-grandparents would have considered the sine qua non of being educated, they are quite capable of navigating many parts of the modern world that their ancestors would have found utterly bewildering.
Is Christianity a Story or a Series of Doctrines? (ScribblePreach) – “…the truth is, Christianity is not essentially about a story, and it is not essentially about a series of propositions. And despite the guru in me, I don’t even want to say Christianity is ‘both’ story and system. It is not – it is something beyond that. Christianity is NOT essentially about stories or systems. Christianity is, essentially, about Christ.”
The “Establishing Shot” – and 9 Other Ways to Strengthen Your Story’s Beginning (K.M. Weiland) – 10 tips for crafting a story opening that will hook readers.
The Sandwich Maiden – Just a shameless reminder that I have a sandwich blog too. 😀 I’ve been updating it frequently lately. If you like sandwich inspirations, check it out!
I love to hear your thoughts!
